I love having these colorful books by unique authors, thank you Hedgespoken for keeping the art of small publishing alive.
This was bought as a Christmas treat to myself, but when I opened the parcel I just had to look closer... then I had to read. Rima Staines has contributed a clever trickster of a book: "Nine Praise Riddles" which will enchant your senses. Read them out loud. They have a wonderful cadence, and the illustrations are spellbinding. I also read Terri Windling's "Seven Little Tales". I follow Terri's blog and this little book has the same depth of wildness in it. You will be transported to a place of bracken and twisted trees, of mystery and magic. Enough! These are meant to be a Christmas treat. To be read away from the hustle and bustle, the packaged party food, TV specials etc. I will light a fire, pour a glass of wine and enter this magical world on Christmas day
The beautifully crafted books in this series, Seven Doors in an Unyielding Stone, are exactly that: seven different voices chanting, singing, telling their own ways in to the place we can only get to in the space between a breath and a glimpse from the corner of the eye. The textures, colors, artwork, and font choices create a rich tactile and visual context in which the language can do its sacred work: the work of changing consciousness, a hint, a startle, an eyeblink at a time. I find carrying these books around in my workbag or setting them on my desk among the mundane mess changes the feel of the day. And reading them by candlelight opens up a whole new walk in dreamtime.
These small books are treasures---thought-provoking, moving, and rewarding to read, and likely re-read over and over. They are a medicine for our time. I am so happy that Hedgespoken produces books like these that inspire us to examine life and showcase the human spirit. Like all the art, story-telling, poetry, and literature created by the magical association that is Hedgespoken, these speak deep truths and ring bells in the heart. Beautiful work.
It is a rare thing indeed to cast one's eye over a single book as good as any of these little story books from Hedgespoken Press. But Tom Hirons and Rima Staines have curated and created seven such wonders and, as if that wasn't enough, indeed written one each of them as well. I have been suitably transported into wondrous realms of the beautiful and the deep and the melancholy, to satisfy even my most story hungry eye. Thank you both and keep them coming! I have the Firebird on the wing to me soon too, can't wait...
These are beautiful books with enticing writing in them.
A wonderful bundle of beautiful treasures !
Beautiful selection of books!
Heartening to see such beautiful, heartfelt work
These collected works are a testament to what is needed at this time. To have all of these excellent writers gathered together for this kind of writing is a rare joy.
I've only just started reading the books, but every one of them is food for the soul. Thanks for bringing this into the world.
These are the most beautiful magical books, like holding ancient treasure in my hands, I cradle their burnished words. Each book a delight, a song wrapped up in a story, a heart-spoken voice carried on the north wind.
I love these little books, so much bigger than they seem, especially as a collection. I gobbled them down as soon as I received them but will read them, one by one, again - more slowly, more mindfully - over the long winter evenings to come. Full of wonderful images, the magic of myth, the magic of words, the magic of story. So much connection to time and place. So many different voices. So many lessons to heed and possible new paths to follow.
Everything from Hedgespoken press is top-notch. Gorgeously designed and the content is beautiful always as well. I suppose I consider myself a collector of the small treasures which come out of this magical print-shop and I look forward to see what they craft next. The world is in dire need of the beauty they provide. Well done Tom and Rima!!
